Ella and I parted ways at the train station an hour later. She was off to college and I was off to the support group that was starting to feel like a full-time job. Every time Ella and I departed, it felt like the last day of high school all over again. She was so focussed and driven that it was sometimes months before we’d see one another again, but every time we did, it was just like old times.

She smiled at me and said, “Take care of your heart, baby girl,” before heading to her platform. I don’t remember where the quote came from. It might have a book or movie we were studying in English in the later years of high school, but ever since we heard it, it had stuck with us. It had become our mantra when one of us was going through something new or scary, and it always seemed to ground us. It was a reminder that it was ok to look after ourselves too.
